Devising ways to redecorate an apartment can be a bit tricky given it’s a rental property and is subject to certain restrictions.

A landlord may object to a tenant painting the walls of the apartment any color other than what’s already on the walls, or switching out a tired chandelier in place of a more updated lighting fixture, so be sure to check with the property owners or managers before redecorating begins.

And if either or both of those actions are forbidden, don’t be discouraged as there are many ways of updating your rental without jeopardizing your security deposit.

Plan

Examine your furniture and decorative items. Determine what’s great as is, what has potential to be great and what can be discarded. In terms of furniture, there are generally pieces that are great structurally that can refurbished, re-upholstered or repositioned to a different area or room altogether.

Sketch

Once you have determined which items you will be working with, survey your living area. Most apartments have a living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Think about the flow of your apartment and how you want your furniture to be arranged and create a sketch for each room.

Decorate

If you’re allowed to paint the walls, clear out the furniture and get started. If painting is out of the question, consider using tapestry or removable decals to add visual interest to your walls. Once the walls are addressed, move in your furniture and enjoy.
